Llio James

I’m a contemporary hand weaver encompassing traditional design in today’s language. Originally from Tal-y-bont, Ceredigion and a graduate of weaving from Manchester School of Art (2009) with a Masters in Design: Fashion & Textiles from Bath Spa University (2014). I have since worked within the textile industry in New York, Scotland, England and Wales.
Today, I work from my studio in Cardiff, using a traditional dobby loom. Designing the cloth in the studio and produced at local mills in Wales and England. I also create unique commission pieces which are hand woven. The work is rooted in the sense of belonging – a subconscious feeling of being at ease; feeling comfortable in a natural habitat. Through this, my work explores traditional Welsh designs that date back generations with the aim of bringing them to life into today’s modern world. Working with wool, I make interior pieces such as blankets and cushions, and have a small range of scarves.
