Chris Boland Designs

The gemstone is of fundamental importance in my work. I use only natural, untreated stones, each selected for its unique inclusions and inherent character. My aim is to tell the story of each stone through bold, sculptural metalwork that both supports and reveals its individual qualities. My practice is informed by a fascination with inorganic structures, drawing inspiration from geological forms, architectural metalwork, and sculpture. Strong, monolithic shapes are used to emphasise the natural features within the gemstones, while surface treatments often reference the marks and textures found in constructed environments. Marks made during the making process are allowed to remain and are often emphasised, reflecting the direct, physical engagement between tools and metal.
I work directly in metal, using traditional techniques such as score folding, soldering, filing, and hand finishing.
